Wagging the Long Tail of Video on YouTube

As my inaugural blog entry on the new Demand Media corporate website, I thought I would kick it off with a major new milestone that is worth sharing – our videos produced by Demand Studios are now regularly serving more than 2 million video streams PER DAY on our various YouTube! channels.

This is serious exposure for premium made-for-internet video that was originally created and curated to fuel popular Demand Media web sites like eHow, LIVESTRONG.com, Golflink and Expert Village

And here is the best part.  What originally began as a marketing-driven syndication effort has now turned into a seven figure revenue stream for the company.  We are really pleased with our ability to generate significant YouTube income through a variety of Google monetization programs.  Since online video monetization is still in its infancy,  these monetization rates are relatively low today -- but are steadily increasing each quarter as YouTube/Google continue to innovate. 

 

As our growth continues, I get asked a lot of questions by analysts, partners and media, like: 

  • How did we leverage YouTube to build a vibrant and valuable audience that craves our content? 
  • How did we become the world’s largest contributor to YouTube covering thousands of niche topics? 
  • How did we succeed in bringing ‘the long tail” of video alive with videos that appeal to YouTube’s audience & advertisers looking to reach that audience? 
  •  How does our large evergreen content library find success on a site made famous by viral videos and UGC “hits”?
