LIVESTRONG.COM Introduces the Pound-for-Pound (#4Pound) Challenge at Advertising Week 8
Those of us in the advertising industry face a major challenge right around this time every year. We all leave the comfort of our daily routines to converge on NYC to celebrate Advertising Week, where we run around the city learning about the latest developments in advertising, catching up with old friends, doing business over lunch and celebrating over cocktails. By the time Thursday rolls around, we’ve had an excellent time, but our bodies pay the price. This year I’m going to try something different and I would like you to join me. In celebration of the recent launch of LIVESTRONG.COM Man and Woman, Demand Media is introducing the Pound for Pound (#4Pound) challenge. We’re encouraging Advertising Week attendees to pay attention to what they consume by tweeting what they’re eating using the #4pound and #AW8 hash tags. The team here at Demand Media will be monitoring these tags, counting each calorie and responding with helpful articles and insights from LIVESTRONG.COM. We’ll report the highlights and lowlights of each day here on the Demand Media blog, so stay tuned for updates. Here’s to a healthy and happy Advertising Week! Advertising Week Highlights – Day 1 Thanks to all who participated in the first day of our pound-for-pound challenge. Most of the meals you reported sounded remarkably healthy, with a few notable exceptions. The attendees of the Stars of Madison Avenue Luncheon honoring Feed America shined light on how many calories there are in a typical meal at Advertising Week. If you ate everything on your plate – roasted chicken breast with mash potatoes, a roast beet, walnut and goat cheese salad, and a piece of chocolate and caramel layer cake with raspberry sauce – you consumed approximately 1250 calories. Depending on your body weight and goals, this could be over half of your suggested daily intake! ![]() On the other end of the scale, the healthiest meal update of the day was @jnorthen’s breakfast, organic oatmeal with fresh figs and banana. Sounds delicious. What time is breakfast this morning, @jnorthen? Several of you reported consuming several cups of coffee. According to studies, moderate amounts of caffeine (one 8 oz. cup, not one Starbucks cup) will actually raise your metabolic rate. Other studies show that after 5 or 6 cups of coffee people begin to show signs of irritability and stress. So remember, a good cup of coffee is not just about drinking the right kind of coffee - it’s also about drinking the right quantity of coffee. If you’re wondering how what you’ve been eating at Advertising Week compares to what the rest of the country has been eating, take a look at LIVESTRONG.COM’s Food Map. You can see what people are eating around the country at this very moment. Check it out. Advertising Week Highlights – Day 2 Based on Tuesday’s tweets it sounds like most of you are making healthy choices, but some of you are slipping. With that in mind I thought I’d ask Adam Bornstein, editorial director of LIVESTRONG.COM, to share a few words of inspiration with you: “Dessert has its place in any diet—even if your goal is losing weight. The key is making sure that your treats are only a small portion of your daily intake, and you’ll be fine. It might be hard to believe, but you can eat your cake—and see your abs too.” With that in mind, let’s take a look at today’s highlights and lowlights. If you cleaned your plate at Advertising Age’s Best Places to Work Luncheon, you put away over 1500 calories. Check out the breakdown: Note: according to attendees the flourless chocolate cake was worth every single calorie. No word on whether any abs were spotted before, during or after the meal. Coming in a close second was our favorite lunch of the day, ringing in at nearly 1100 calories. It included 3 pieces of pizza, half a veal parmesan sub sandwich and an antipasto. The healthiest meal of the day went to @adriang1960, whose lunch rang in at just under 500 calories including an 8oz chicken breast with habanero mustard sauce, a romaine salad with grape tomatoes topped with balsamic dressing and a protein shake For those of you who made it out last night, make sure that you log the time you spent on the dance floor. Did you know that dancing can burn 250 to 500 calories per hour depending on what kind of dancing you were doing? And if you didn’t burn off quite enough calories dancing last night I hope that you’re up and moving this morning. Did you know that exercise can help curb the effects of hangovers? It won’t cure them completely, but you will feel much better. Want to track your own calories? Try the MyPlate application from LIVESTRONG.COM. It’s easy to use and it even comes in mobile versions so that you can use it on the go. Advertising Week Highlights – Day 3 Let’s start with the highlights today. For me, that was the Friar’s Club Roast of Rick Boyko. I’m very proud that Demand Media was able to sponsor an event that saluted the brilliance of Rick. Our very own Oren Katzeff, VP & GM of Cracked.com opened up the show, and held his own against comedic legends like Susie Essman from Curb Your Enthusiasm and Stewie Stone, the infamous Friar’s go-to roaster. However, what I’m not proud of is the calorie count on those appetizers. Are you ready for this? If you sampled each of those appetizers, you put away 883 calories (and that doesn’t even include drinks!). That’s more calories than a McDonald’s Big Mac with a small order of fries. Check it out: Speaking of which, the healthiest meal of the day went to our very own @jeffdosset, who skipped dinner at the roast to have a light dinner after the show. It’s been a great Advertising Week everyone! Thanks for participating and make sure to continue logging your meals on MyPlate for more insight and knowledge into the food you’re eating!
