Demand Studios Roadshow (Part II): Journalism is Alive and Well – Inside Demand Studios
Plenty of ink has been spilled in recent years about the supposed demise of journalism, but don’t believe the headlines.  The ways we create and consume content is definitely changing, but the desire for that content is stronger than ever.  More than ever there is also a continued need for content produced in a responsible – and sustainable – way.  Where newspapers are leading with the social responsibility of investigative news reporting, we’ve created a content-producing ecosystem focused on our brand of trusted service journalism, also referred to as useful, evergreen content. Media isn’t dying, its story is just being rewritten. And, we’re working to adapt the talents of traditional publishing to the opportunities today’s technology brings – albeit with a sustainable business model the industry needs.

That’s the message Demand Studios brought to the
Society of Professional Journalists Convention in Indianapolis this summer. Our mutual respect for the disciplines required to produce quality content (qualifying writers; plagiarism check; copyedit and fact-check steps; etc.) made for a perfect marriage of their skills and our opportunities. Earlier, I wrote about how our inaugural Demand Studios roadshow gave us a chance to meet some of our many talented content creators all around the country.  It was also the perfect occasion to attend the SPJ Convention and speak directly to journalists about how Demand Studios brings the science of the Internet to the art of traditional media.

We met with more than 300 highly qualified writers and editors, the vast majority of whom were curious to learn more about Demand Studios.  In general, they were intrigued by our method of identifying titles, amazed at our wealth of potential assignments, and impressed by our industry-leading commitment to maintaining editorial quality.  It also didn’t hurt that at a conference dominated by panels like “Burned Out, Laid Off or Bought Out?” and “'Big J' in Tough Times,” we were telling the story of having paid out more than $16,000,000 in the last three years to people just like them.

We also enjoyed forging relationships with several major journalism schools, whose professors were particularly pleased to hear that Demand Studios was offering work that would nurture the future careers of journalism students.  In fact, for aspiring writers and established creators alike, Demand Studios offers consistent work, the support of a community of peers, and fast-growing audience reach – three key ingredients of any successful writing career.

All in all, the people in the journalism industry we spoke with appeared ready to embrace new ways of pursuing a profession they are so passionate about, and we were happy to have shared the Demand Studios message at such a fortuitous time.  While the future of media is still unfolding, we’re working to empower content creators to help us write the next big story together.
