SANTA MONICA, Calif. Dec. 14, 2009 - LIVESTRONG.COM, an online destination for health, fitness and lifestyle-related information, today announced the launch of MyPlate D, a free online nutrition tracking tool designed to empower people with diabetes to take control of their disease and to help those who are at risk make healthier choices. LIVESTRONG.COM began testing this new tool in conjunction with National Diabetes Month and is now releasing it to a wider audience to raise awareness of the disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, 23.6 million adults and children in the United States-nearly 8 percent of the population- have diabetes.

"LIVESTRONG.COM was created to help consumers take action and reduce their risks for diseases and illness by making small, positive changes in their daily lives. MyPlate D was really just the next step in developing an all-encompassing and cohesive resource for risk reduction," said Lance Armstrong, founder of LIVESTRONG and advisory board chairman for LIVESTRONG.COM.

MyPlate D includes comprehensive nutrition information which enables users to track calories, fat, protein and carbohydrates for more than 625,000 food items. The tool also allows users to view their overall nutrition, as well as in-depth data about specific foods to balance their nutritional intake with daily activities and exercise.

MyPlate D allows users to directly link their health to food intake through detailed graphs that track Glucose levels and Insulin usage in real time. Users can view up-to-the-minute information to map food consumption to vital data, in addition to trends over time. MyPlate D also has community forums, where diabetic users can come together and share their experiences and encouragement.

The Center for Disease Control has reported that Type 2 Diabetes has increased more than 90 percent since 1997, due in large part to an increase in obesity. However, people can reduce their risk of diabetes by making small changes in diet and increasing exercise. MyPlate D on LIVESTRONG.COM enables users to directly map their food intake to spikes and drops in Glucose and Insulin levels.

"Diabetes is a major problem facing Americans, but small lifestyle changes can go a long way in managing, and even preventing, the disease," said Francine R. Kaufman, M.D. and LIVESTRONG.COM expert. "We designed MyPlate D to give users the tools to make better choices, and immediately see how changes in diet impact their overall health."

Developed by Demand Media, Inc., the leader in distributed social media, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), LIVESTRONG.COM hosts a unique combination of original, expert-produced content, interactive Web 2.0 tools and an active community of 2 million registered users that has enabled it to emerge as a key player in the online health space. MyPlate D is built on top of one of LIVESTRONG.COM's most successful tools, The Daily PlateTM, which leverages the world's largest and most accurate food database. To date, LIVESTRONG.COM users have successfully lost more than 5 million pounds, and burned almost 3 billion calories by tracking their exercise and food using The Daily Plate on LIVESTRONG.COM.

"Working closely with our nutritionist and an endocrinologist, we developed MyPlate D to help our users get the best possible experience from the site by giving them a high quality tool to manage the disease that's both easy to use and effective," said Dan Brian, general manager of LIVESTRONG.COM.
